The Klu Klux Klan, a group of people born out of pure hate for integration of any kind in the United States. Today the Klan would seem to appeal to only a small group of people however, based on the time period and the circumstances the Klan was able to erupt in extremely racist southern states right after slavery was ended.
The first Klan spread mainly due to people wanting to keep blacks down after they started to gain some rights after slavery was abolished. It is worth noting the early Klan's extreme violence. They were known for Lynching, beating and drowning innocent blacks. In the end the first Klan fell as times changed and integration became the focus of the whole nation. It wasn't until Brown v. The Board of Education in 1956 before the Klan was seen again.
This time the Klan appealed to a much larger audience. The entire country became united under Bob Jones, arguably the most successful Klan leader ever. Under Bob Jones, the Klan grew to an unprecedented number of people around 4 million members. They were able to influence elections all across the nation. The Klan did last for quite some time but just like before it eventually faded into the background like before.
Now in North Carolina, following Mr. Trump's election to Presidency, the Klan is possibly going to see a 3rd iteration. We will have to be forever vigilant to make sure the country does not tear itself apart and fall into yet another civil war.
